Carol Shields
Acclaimed fiction writer and
playwright Carol Shields was born in Oak Park, Illinois, in 1935, lived
for a time in Winnipeg, eventually moving to and residing in Victoria,
British Columbia, until her death in 2003. Carol obtained a Bachelor
of Arts degree from Hanover College and a Master of Arts degree from
the University of Ottawa. While in Winnipeg, she held the positions
of Lecturer and Professor of English at the University of Manitoba,
and the post of Chancellor at the University of Winnipeg. In her honour,
the City of Winnipeg established The Carol Shields Winnipeg Book Award,
which was given out for the first time at Brave New Words: the Manitoba
Writing and Publishing Awards ceremony in the year 2000.

life. We are human because we use language. So I think we are less human
when we use less language.”
