Aaron Bushkowsky
Aaron Bushkowsky, a graduate
of the Canadian Film Centre, has been produced and published in several
genres: film, poetry, theatre, prose, and non-fiction. His book of poetry
ed and mabel go to the moon was nominated for the Dorothy Livesay
Award for Best Book of Poetry in BC. His latest book of poems, Mars
is for Poems, garnered critical acclaim. His short stories have
been published across Canada. His short film, “The Alley,” which
aired on CBC, won the National Screen Institute drama prize, and was
nominated for six Leos (BC Film Awards).
Aaron’s many plays, which
include the award-winning Strangers Among Us, have been produced
throughout Canada. He has also been nominated for Jessie Richardson
Theatre Awards for Outstanding Original Play for five years in a row,
winning two. His latest play One Last Kiss, directed by Roy Surette
received its world premiere at Victoria’s Belfry Theatre in January
2004 and was also produced by the Vancouver Playhouse shortly afterward.
Aaron’s The Dead Reckoning, also produced by The Vancouver
Playhouse, was nominated for a Jessie Richardson Theatre Award for writing.
Soulless, was produced by Rumble Theatre in April 2004, another
world premiere. Aaron has served as playwright-in-residence at Touchstone
Theatre, The Playhouse, Rumble Theatre and as a resident film-writer
at the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto. He also has a book of prose,
The Vanishing Man (Cormorant Books, 2004).
Aaron completed his MFA in
Creative Writing at UBC and teaches playwriting and screenwriting at
Langara College’s Studio 58, Douglas College, Playwrights Theatre
Centre, and the Vancouver Film School. He is the co-artistic director
of Solo Collective, an emerging Vancouver theatre company noted for
producing new Canadian plays, particularly monologues. The company has
been nominated for many Jessie Richardson Theatre awards, including
two for Outstanding Production. Aaron lives in Vancouver with his Aussie
Shepherd Frankie and his feral cat, Mabel.
