Where Stories Meet
by Shannon Hengen
An Oral History of De-ba-jeh-mu-jig Theatre
Interviews with, or stories
about, Shirley Cheechoo, Tomson Highway, Larry Lewis, Alanis King, Audrey
Debassige Wemigwans, Rose Marie and Marjorie Trudeau, Ron Berti and
Joe Osawabine.
Where Stories Meet is
both history and commentary. Vivid accounts of the early and middle
years of North America’s longest running Aboriginal theatre, De-ba-jeh-mu-jig,
when the resourcefulness of the founding members was challenged to the
limit, intermix with incisive views on the place of Aboriginal theatre
in the Canadian mainstream today. Award-winning Native artists Shirley
Cheechoo, Tomson Highway and Alanis King recount their days with the
theatre group along with their sense of the development of the Aboriginal
stage; current stalwarts of the group, artistic directors and board
members sketch out a vision for the future of an art form that is certain
to have influence beyond the shores of beautiful Manitoulin Island,
Ontario, where this theatre began and continues to thrive.
