The Land of Knees
by Geneviève Billette, translated by Michael Gauthier
Timothy and Sammy, two nine
year olds, seek the Land of Knees, a mythical country with no shortage
of knees to sit on, and where kisses and hugs are no longer counted.
Armed with their worldly belongings, they have arranged to meet at a
theatre. As Sammy waits impatiently outside, Timothy uses the theatre’s
bathroom one last time before embarking on their quest. At precisely
that moment, a tragic event occurs.
Timothy wakes up to find the
theatre in ruins, and discovers Sarah, a seven-year-old singer trapped
in a tuxedo (minus the jacket), whose singing voice has left her. Together,
they try to find a way out, but Sarah is in desperate need of affection,
and Timothy has only his ideals to comfort her. Separated by fate, Timothy
and Sammy’s relationship is compromised as they come to understand
that Sarah is the key to their survival.
The Land of Knees is
about love: unbreakable, undying, passionate love. Love which requires
discipline and disobedience. Love that frees the spirit and creates
everlasting friendships.
