Seven Short Plays
from Theatre Ontario
Selected and with introductions
by Marian Doucette and Skip Shand
This volume aims to address a need expressed by school and
community theatre groups which will challenge and stretch
developing actors directors and designers.
Four of the plays have had professional production and the
other three have been successfully produced by several community
theatres.
Bittergirl - Three women, A. B. and C whose
generic man D, sets the piece in motion by announcing in the
first scene that the relationship is over and he's leaving.
Mail-Order Annie - During the 1900s, thousands
of 'lonely hearts' hoped to find companionship, love and a
future through advertisements in a national magazine.
Derailed - Four frequently manic characters
take a train ride that transforms their tawdry lives into
vivid expressionistic extravagance.
Bellies, Knees and Ankles - Everyone in
the play has secrets, and over the course of the play the
audience discovers that each of these four women is engaged
in her own search for her personal self.
Suffering Fools - In the aftermath of a
failed suicide attempt, Rodney's unfailingly loyal friend
Bob has decided to exercise some of Rodney's demons into a
memory play.
Buttonhole in Silk - Daughter comes home
to English in hopes of discovering and asserting her own identify
and to break her estrangement with her mother.
The Terrible False Deception - A four-act
play about a three-act play which it contains within itself.
