Rope Enough
by Sky Gilbert
Rope Enough is a psychological murder mystery.
Ichabod and Dylan are two young effeminate gay
party boys whose sybaritic existence is abruptly
interrupted when they are both charged with the
murder of Ichabod’s parents. In prison, they
are interviewed by right wing-journalist Cecilia
Wainscott, who quickly discovers that Ichabod
is a complex character—both a theoretical mathematician
and an exuberantly dark misanthrope. In the end,
Cecilia learns a little bit about herself, gay
men, theoretical mathematics and the nature of
the universe. Are Dylan and Ichabod evil cold-blooded
killers (as in Hitchcock’s “Rope”), turned on
by a perverse cocktail of death and orgasms,
or are they simply misunderstood by a homophobic
culture? It’s all very scary and funny—but only
you, the viewer, can decide…
“The dialogue is sharp and often witty… all
these narrative statements finally come together
to make some provocative statements about the
nature of identity—gay or otherwise—in today’s
society.”
—Richard Ouzounian, Toronto Star
“The boys and girls at the Buddies box office
have their work cut out for them in Sky Gilbert’s
Rope Enough. There will be bums in seats for
Gilbert’s latest, a fully realized and compelling
departure from his other work.”
—Kate Pedersen, NOW Magazine “An equally swank duo, disciples of Derrida,
murder or claim to have murdered for a kaleidoscope
of reasons. Maybe they want to subvert conventional
ideas about gays; maybe they want to confirm
them; maybe they want to have fun. The author-director,
as capricious as they are, plays with all the
possibilities, to surprisingly provocative effect.”
—Robert Cushman, National Post
